CURRICULA OVERVIEW

Non-Professional CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Foundations of Sowa Rigpa
1 Year | 150+ Hours

This one-year program can be taken as a standalone, non-professional program--it is also the foundational first year of our professional trainings. It explores the fundamentals of Tibetan healing to better take care of oneself, improve quality of life, and learn how to promote health and rejuvenation in your home and community. The course follows the main structure of the Root Tantra (tsa gyu) with special emphasis on safe and practical applications at home.

Comprised of approximately 100 hours of pre-recorded lectures given by Dr. Nida Chenagtsang, senior SRI faculty and esteemed guest teachers, accompanied by weekly 90-minute live online meetings with mentors for Q+A and student assessment. Course topics are divided into eleven modules given over the course of three 12-week trimesters.


Professional CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Sowa Rigpa Counselor
Foundations + 1 Year | 400+ Hours

A two-year professional training in a unique and dynamic form of counseling grounded in Sowa Rigpa, Yuthok Nyingthig, and contemporary psychotherapeutic theories and practices:
• Approximately 200 hours of class time each year. Year One = Foundations of Sowa Rigpa.
• Combination of self-paced video learning with select live online modules and weekly online discussions and practical sessions 
• Intervision sessions to discuss case studies
• Optional in-person intensive
• Final Project on topic of student's choice

Application for Sowa Rigpa Practitioner Year 2 takes place at the conclusion of Foundations year.
PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Sowa Rigpa Practitioner
Foundations + 3 Years | 800+ Hours

A four-year professional training in Sowa Rigpa based on the Gyud Zhi རྒྱུད་བཞི། (Four Medical Tantras):
• Approximately 200 hours of class time each year. (Year One = Foundations of Sowa Rigpa.)
• Combination of self-paced video learning with select live online modules and weekly summary, discussion, and question and answer sessions with group mentors and guest teachers.
• Four required five-day in-person hands on practical intensives offered regularly at different locations around the world (California, Tuscany, Kathmandu) to be completed from year 2 on (can be completed individually or combined in one trip to Nepal)
• Opportunities for supplemental clinical internship and study abroad in Nepal. (Can be combined with required intensives.)

PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Sowa Rigpa Yoga Practitioner
Foundations + 3 Modules

A three-part Tibetan Yoga immersion on Nejang, Lujong, and Tummo Yogas that supports dedicated yoga practitioners to deepen their own practice while learning how to safely teach and share methods either in a group setting or in a one on one therapeutic context, informed by the healing principles of Sowa Rigpa.
Each 100 day module consists of one 5-7 day in-person retreat followed weekly online sessions. 
DHARMA PRGOGRAMS

Yuthok Nyingthig

The Yuthok Nyingthig, the ‘Heart Essence of Yuthok’ is a unique and comprehensive set of Tibetan Buddhist practices transmitted by Yuthok Yönten Gönpo the Younger, the great 12th century Tibetan physician and meditation adept who is considered to be an emanation of Medicine Buddha. It is a complete system of practice from the Anuttarayogatantra (Highest Yoga Tantra) class of teachings, beginning with Ngöndro (the preliminaries) and progressing through Kyerim and Dzogrim (Creation and Completion Stage practices) to the highest practices of Mahamudra and Dzogchen.
ELECTIVE CLASSES

Tibetan Language

Small group Tibetan language courses (limited to five students per section to permit extensive teacher-student interaction) are offered for our students and sangha. 
Six levels of twelve week sessions are offered. 
ELECTIVE CLASSES

Complementary Studies

SRI offeres a variety of courses for the general public or for students to complement their Sowa Rigpa education. Topics include Sache (Tibetan Geomancy), Tibetan Astrology, Dream Studies, as well as collaborative courses with teachers from other institutions.
